HTC One (M8) gallery and more details!

The HTC One (M8) launch event is over, yet we still are very excited! It seems that HTC did it again – right from this place I’m telling you – this will be the best smartphone of the 2014!

Here are some official pictures:

As you can see HTC One (M8) comes in a 3 colours - Gunmetal Grey, Amber Gold and Glacial Silver. Personally I love the first one - Gunmetal Grey. It looks gorgeous!

Here are the highlights that stand out the most:
  • A more refined design: it's 90% metal now, with the metal wrapping up the side (the HTC One was 70% metal). The gunmetal grey is simply gorgeous and has this great texture to it. The entire phone is more solidly constructed.
  • Bigger Battery: with a 2600 mAH battery, it lasts longer.
  • Bigger Storage: Yes, it's true, there is a microSD slot in there, and it supports up to 128 GB of storage. How's that for mind-blowing?
  • Bigger Screen: 5 inches is a nice size; not so huge like the One Max, but noticeably bigger than the 4.7 inch screen on the HTC One.
  • Better BoomSound: The audio quality from the dual-front facing speakers on the HTC One was great...but you wouldn't believe how much better the new HTC One (M8) sounds! Richer, fuller audio with a wider sound. It's 25% louder, yes, but the audio quality is dramatically better.
  • A Better Camera Experience: It's a 4 megapixel UltraPixel sensor, but we switched to a new provider for the sensor, completely addressed the pink tint issue, added a second sensor to get depth/spatial information (which allows for some great camera effects). Image quality is simply better.
And here is the official full specification:

The Beating Heart of the All New HTC One (M8): Qualcomm's Snapdragon 801

At the centre of any HTC is the processor. A combination of CPU (general processing) and GPU (graphics processing), the modern processor is a marvel of miniaturization and integrated technology. Many of you spec-loving types have been drooling over the forthcoming Snapdragon 805 that was announced at CES in January. This is a powerful processor, but it's also one that isn't ready yet in mass quantities - that's the reason why it's not in the HTC One (M8). Qualcomm is great at pre-announcing their products to create consumer demand, which then helps them with orders from the companies that buy their products (such as HTC).

The Snapdragon 801, the processor in the new HTC One (M8), isn't just a warmed-over Snapdragon 800. It's has some significant improvements over its predecessor, including:

  • 45% improvement in camera sensor performance (which drives the ultra-fast focusing technology)
  • 28% faster graphics performance from the Adreno 330 GPU
  • 14% faster CPU performance
  • 18% faster digital signal processing (DSP)
  • 17% faster memory performance
  • Faster image post-processing for editing
  • eMMC 5.0 memory interface support
What does all this technical talk amount to? The HTC One (M8) with the Snapdragon 801 processor will be the fastest, most powerful phone HTC has ever created. Having used one for a couple of months now, I can genuinely say it's the fastest HTC ever. It just screams.
Anandtech has a great article covering this in even greater detail; for reference, the HTC One (M8) coming out in Asia will have the MSM8974AC clocked at 2.5 Ghz, while the rest of the world will have the MSM8974AB clocked at 2.3 Ghz. Other than the 200 mHZ difference in clock speeds, the chips are otherwise identical.

The HTC M8 to be launched on 25.03.2014

It seems that we finally know the date – 25.03.2014 looks like the day when HTC will launch their new flagship device and the HTC One (M7) successor – HTC One M8 which is rumoured to be called "HTC One+" or "HTC One 2" or just " HTC One (M8)".

About the device itself we know pretty much already. Recently we wrote about the design (The HTC One 2014 (M8) design exposed) and we've seen some popular mock-ups made by hamdir in HTC One 2014 (M8) target renders, a visual compilation of all the leaks. I must say this all looks promising and we still hope to see HTC M8 equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 instead of an already one year old Snapdragon 800 SoC.

The HTC One 2014 (M8) design exposed

One thing for sure, everyone seems to agree that HTC is defined by their design and build quality. The new HTC One is pretty much revealed in terms of design and construction, strikingly it looks similar to my mockups posted few days back.

Latest round of M8 leaks courtesy of @HTCFamily_RU and @NexusLeaks

What's clear from the latest photos is that there is an entirely new more rugged color combination: gun metal grey, as rumored it has a more intense metal texture like darker silver and the antenna strips are black instead of white, this should tolerate a little more abuse than the current silver and black HTC One, not surprisingly it also reminds us of the space grey iPhone 5s.

There also is one recent HTC phone with similar color, the more affordable plastic HTC One HTC Desire 700, I recently had my hands on this device and I have to say it looks fantastic particularly the speaker covers which are the only metal elements in that phone, of course it's also rumored that the M8 will be released with up to four color combinations from the get go.

Gun metal grey with black accents: reminds us of the HTC Desire 700

Other apparent elements in the construction are the four visible antenna strip edges in the front view, a thinner outer frame and the metal back plate extending to the sides, all of which we highlighted in our previous article, unlike the "composite" HTC One pseudo metal unibody with molded plastic sides, the M8 clearly carries a complete metal body fully leveraging HTC's antenna innovations as seen in the current HTC One, which means no ugly plastic patches and the antennas are simply streamlined in minimal injected strips. Like the old HTC Desire HD the entire internal hardware, screen and speaker covers will be housed within this unibody.

The current HTC One is universally praised for it's beauty and high build quality, however it's that very beauty which was often subject to aesthetic damage due to the exposed machined diamond cut edges and the sandwiched plastic frame, a design that suffered a small gap-gate on the first production runs and prompted HTC to do some corrections with the One Mini and Max by adding a protective plastic frame, but with the M8 it looks like HTC is one step closer to their "dream for an all-metal phone".

The HTC One (M7) had a unique composite unibody, previous HTC phones like the gorgeous One S and Desire HD had full metal bodies with big plastic patches for reception

Now let's compare it with our own previous renders and we can see how close it is to the leaked official render, right down to the location of the volume and power buttons, the dual cameras and the exposed antenna strips in the front, but we also notice something new on the top right, is that an exposed notification LED? it brings memories of another HTC metal phone, the One V.

The HTC One V had a unique LED notification light visible from many angles

With rumors of a unique camera, an Ultrapixel sensor for low light and 13 MP sensor for daylight (joining an already strong set of camera innovations like Burst, ZOE and Video Highlights), it's clear that HTC is attempting to refine the HTC One design by addressing most concerns and niggles ranging from the lack of pixel count in the daylight camera, passing by the lack of SD card storage expansion, the neat but hard to spot micro notification light and finally ending the fragile beauty of the HTC One high end construction. The HTC One was their "all-metal phone", their next HTC One seems to be the "full-metal phone".

Finally there is one more matter to point out, the leaked print seems to be for the official screen protector, simply titled "HTC ONE (M8)". Is HTC about to simply use codenames a way to separate between old and new models?

We will leave discussing the rumored hardware specs for another day. Of course this is all following the trail of leakers, which can still be misleading so let us know if you think some big surprises are still in store.

HTC One 2014 (M8) target renders, a visual compilation of all the leaks

Ever since it was leaked that the HTC M8 and Sense 6 will carry on-screen buttons along with the appearance of M8 covers being sold on Chinese supply websites, the web has been flooding with alleged M8 Photoshopped pictures. Let's take a closer look at what we already know about the incoming high-end device from HTC.

There is no denying that many of those leaks are credible, particularly the blue unibody shell we saw first, followed by a 3D printed model, the leaked dual camera/flash and finally a full blown frontal leak. All of which are pieces to a single puzzle from which you can draw the entire picture and that's exactly what we did!

Design wise we can draw the following conclusion from the above leaks:
  • The metal unibody is now full, think Desire HD, it extends to the sides getting rid of the previous sandwiched plastic mold
  • The only plastic areas left are the injected antenna strips similar to the current HTC One, they also extend to the sides and appear on the front outer edges
  • Dual camera flash like the iPhone5s with different color tones, they share a single hole with a unique semi curved design
  • The volume rocker is on the right
  • The power button moved to the top right
  • SIM card is on the top left and SD slot on the opposite right above the volume rocker (evident in the under-screen fixture from the blue leak)
  • The  device corners are now more rounded
  • There is no added frame surrounding the screen area, instead the metal speaker covers and screen are inserted within the unibody, resulting in a true full metal phone
  • The speaker grills extended in width and the top sensors are moved next to the front camera
  • The main camera and sub camera have a machined diamond cut edges like the One Mini, the previous white ring on the current HTC One camera is gone
  • It's larger than the current HTC One, similar to the HTC Butterfly in size
Sense 6 Blinkfeed and wallpapers were leaked via @evleaks and of course the UI itself appears in many of the latest photos, which reveal a more transparent UI like stock Kitkat launcher and on-screen menu buttons, some widgets are tipped to have flipped from black to white.

More details about the HTC M8

In a few months we'll most likely see new high-end device from HTC. Some of the current rumours were true, but here comes much more details you've never heard before!

Device will be named HTC One+ (codename: HTC M8) and it won't have any capacitive buttons. No more "home" or "back" buttons we get used to with the HTC One (HTC M7). Camera is probably a 6MP or 8MP module, of course with the UltraPixel™ technology and probably the new HTC ImageChip™ 3. Current rumours about double lens (for low and high lighting) might be true as well. Battery capacity is much bigger now - 2900 mAh instead of 2300 mAh in the HTC One. With just a slightly bigger screen in the HTC One+ (5") versus HTC One (4,7") we can expect much better battery life.

Chipset (SoC) is very likely to be Snapdragon 805 (instead of 800). This is a very good news because Snapdragon 800 is already quite an "old" chipset. The only problem is the drivers development by Qualcomm. Let's hope that won't stop HTC from replacing S800 with the S805.

In contrast to the HTC One, the One+ will have removable micoSD card. The non-removable microSD card in the HTC One was a source of a lot of critics from Android fans. Hopefully the design of the HTC M8 won't suffer from that.

HTC One+ will be equipped with the newest HTC Sense™ 6.0 and Android KitKat.

So what do you think? I'm already very excited and really can't wait for the HTC One successor. The HTC One won almost every award in the 2013 knocking out the competition. Let's hope the HTC One+ will repeat this great success!

To summarize:
  1. Name: HTC One+ (HTC M8)
  2. Screen: 5" FullHD 1080p covered by Gorilla Glass 3
  3. Battery: 2900mAh
  4. Camera: 6MP or 8MP with UltraPixel™ technology and double lens
  5. SoC: Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 805
  6. RAM: 2GB LPDDR3
  7. Buttons: no capacitive buttons
  8. OS: Android KitKat with HTC Sense™ 6.0
  9. SIM: micro-SIM
  10. Front camera: 2.1MP
  11. NFC: yes

HTC One with KitKat and HTC Sense 5.5 is finally out!

Android 4.4 KitKat with HTC Sense 5.5 is now available for the HTC One. This is a must-have update for all HTC One owners.

Sounds great? Well, you might not be happy after all. So far the update is available only for the owners of the Developer Edition of the HTC One. But there is a good news too - you can have KitKat update on your "regular" HTC One too, without waiting for the official update (which might take few more weeks).

To make it possible, Android Revolution HD has been updated to 40.x series, based on the official Android 4.4 KitKat & HTC Sense 5.5 update (4.06.1540.2).

Why KitKat update is that important? It has several very important changes:
  1. Vastly improved security
  2. Smarter "Location" settings
  3. Better performance
  4. Improved battery consumption
  5. Faster multitasking
  6. Better Google Hangouts integration
  7. ...and much more!
Here are some screenshots. You can see the new Location settings panel.

Users feedback so far leaves no doubts - this update brings significant performance improvements. Some users are even reporting, that Android 4.4 with HTC Sense 5.5 gives better performance experience than pure KitKat update for the HTC One Google Edition which we wrote about here. I think this is enough said. Don't stay on your old 4.3 OS and grab newest 4.4 update as soon as possible!

KitKat for HTC One Google Edition is out. Sense version coming soon!

Android "four point four" (aka KitKat) is what most HTC One users are still eagerly waiting for. The "senseless" version is already available to download via Over The Air (OTA) update on the HTC One Google Play Edition.

If you haven't received the update yet, or you don't have a Google Play Edition variant of the HTC One, you can still have a taste of the fresh Google goody. Just navigate to my HTC One Google Play Edition thread on the xda-developers forum and download Android Revolution HD based on Android 4.4 KitKat for the HTC One.

What we've already learned so far is that you'll probably need an S-OFF device in order to properly boot KitKat custom ROM. It's a weird issue we still investigate and we hope to come up with some more convenient solution soon!

Also some good news for HTC Sense fans - Android 4.4 with HTC Sense 5.5 on board will be available very soon! Don't be upset it's still Sense 5.5 instead of Sense 6.0. New update will bring a lot of bugs fixes and all the goodies Android 4.4 comes with. Stay tuned!

The official Nexus 5 press shot directly from Google

It seems that the photo of the incoming Nexus 5 "leaked" to the web. Of course, I believe that nothing happens mistakenly, especially when it comes to Google. Let's call it "official leak" then.

As you can see, the device is powered by the Android 4.4 KitKat with a refreshed User Interface. It still has a very minimalistic design, so probably there won't be an "interface revolution", which appears to be a common policy by Google. And it seems to work quite well, looking at the marketing success of the Nexus 4.

Not much we can say yet about the visual changes in the Android 4.4 KitKat, but looking at the picture you can see white notification icons and refreshed "Phone" and "Camera" icons.

Personally, I think that the new Nexus 5 looks gorgeous. The volume buttons are again on the left and the power button is on the right side, which is the best combination (typical for Nexus devices), because you can easily turn the device ON with your thumb right after grabbing the device into your hand. It also seems to be made of an really high quality material. The screen would be probably IPS LCD 4,95" with a 1080p (Full HD) resolution.

If the rumours are true that the heart of the new Nexus 5 will be a Snapdragon 800 SoC, then I see no other scenario but a great success of this device.

Stock system dumps (Android 4.3 with HTC Sense 5.5) for HTC One

Very important update is out since yesterday for HTC One user. Android Revolution HD 30.0 - the world first custom ROM based on Android 4.3 & HTC Sense 5.5 for HTC One is available for download on XDA-Developers threadHowever, there is always one problem when it comes to HTC updates - no RUUs (ROM Update Utility) officially available for download for regular users (HTC One Developer Edition and Google Edition seems to be the only exceptions). Why RUU is that important to us? I already made a short explanation here, but let's remind that again.

RUU (.exe) files for MS Windows are installers of complete firmware, including for example system or data partitions. Not having latest RUU means:
  1. users using custom ROMs can't download latest OTA from HTC,
  2. developers have no system dumps they can work with.
Ad. 1) If you want to download and flash latest OTA, your device must have completely stock system partition and recovery. Every OTA update is checking MD5 of each file on system partition to ensure .apk patch can be applied. If even one of 1000 files won't match, OTA update installation will fail. In this case you need to flash the latest official update you can find (even one year old) and later download official OTA updates.

Ad. 2) There are few workarounds, however none of them is as good as having a RUU:
  • adb pull /system in custom recovery mode*
  • cp /system /data/media/dump in custom recovery mode*
  • nandroid backup
  • boot partition can be taken from inside firmware.zip inside OTA .zip package or it can be dumped using dd if=</path/to/boot/partition> of=/data/media/boot.img
adb pull, cp or dd commands must be executed from custom recovery mode, otherwise system dump will be missing few important files or these files will have 0kb size. Also, keep in mind that adb features are heavily limited on stock un-rooted device. In case of dd command, root access (su) is needed to make such operation.

That's why I created my own stock system dumps (as a custom recovery .zip packages) for some HTC devices. I believe this can save a lot of time for many XDA users and developers.

More details about incoming Sense 5.5 update

The dust hasn't settled yet after the first worldwide HTC Sense 5.5 screenshots and here comes the another part of the fresh new details about newest HTC Sense UI. Have fun!

Lock-screen widgets - possibility to place one widget on the lock-screen. You need to swipe left to see the additional screen, where you can place of one these widgets: Gmail, Google+, Calendar, Google Keep (x2), Calculator, Music, Google Now and some widgets from 3rd party applications with support for lock-screen widgets, like Minimalistic Text or SoundHound

Possibility to use entire UI in landscape mode when device is inside car dock. Home screen, phone panel and basically everything else is working very well in landscape mode.

Possibility to use "Automatic brightness" and "Maximum brightness level" at the same time. This allows you to save some battery, because brightness max level can be limited.

Possibility to edit "Phone" panel. You can rearrange them or even remove unused tabs. This is rather small, but very nice improvement. You don't need to swipe 3 or 4 times any more to access particular tab.

New BlinkFeed settings panel, where you can select the exact content you want to view on your BlinkFeed screen. It seems that HTC really focused on their BlinkFeed child. Let's hope it will still be getting better and better!

Possibility to protect SMS backup with password. I believe that every "security" or "privacy" related update is important, even if most users won't probably use it.

"Stay awake" is finally back in Developer options in Settings. Taken away few months ago and desperately desired by users and developers.

Up to 6 (previously 5) home-screen panels including BlinkFeed screen. In my personal opinion 6 is weird number because this little thin line, also known as screen indicator can never be in the centre. This can be little confusing when using the device.

"Do not disturb" mode accessible via Quick Settings panel. Really great feature if you don't want to be waken up few times during the night!

More details coming soon!
